In an effort to show an array of content that comes out of the country, SA’s streaming network has partnered with Canal+ for this year’s release. Award-winning creators Layla Swart and Jahmil X.T. Qubeka from Yellowbone Entertainment were responsible for South Africa’s 2020 Oscar entry, the boxing drama Knuckle City, the most awarded film at the 2020 SAFTA’s, where it took home six awards, including Best Director for Jahmil and Best Editor for Layla.
The power duo has come out with a new show.
Blood Psalms is a series based on ancient African mythology where princess Zazi leads her people through ancient curses, long-standing tribal vendettas, and the wrath of the Gods. A second series I’m about to watch that’s set in the Eastern came, following the incredible DAM.
It features an ensemble cast. Most of them coming from Knuckle City & SAFTA winners Bongile Mantsai, Hamilton Dlamini, Hlubi Mboya, Mothusi Magano, Siv Ngesi, Thishiwe Ziqubu, Warren Masemola and Zolisa Xaluva as well as SAFTA nominees Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa, Niza Jay, Richard Lukunku, Sello Maake Ka Ncube, Thando Thabethe, Thembekile Komani and Zikhona Sodlaka.
Faith Baloyi and Thabo Rametsi, the leads in the 2019 Berlinale Panorama opener Flatland and Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu respectively.
