It had to be another Thursday evening after a half-day at my new job, a stint on campus, and rounding it off with me freshening up. Getting ready to head out in the night to hear this presentation by Universal music and Prince Kaybee. Courvoisier was on tap so you know, great night! First time, too!
At the end of it all, after a stellar performance by Minnie, Nhlanhla Nciza and Brenden Praise, as the press, the judge and the public opinion I had to sit down with this man of the moment and ask him a few things:
I always battle with this; what’s the difference between an EP and a full album?
It’s an abbreviation for Extended Play. It’s not enough to make an album but its enough to make an EP. It’s like when an artist tries to be creative or they feel like they produced something creative and they have 4 hit songs and add a few others to make it an album. It’s not those times anymore. You can release what you have. As constant as you want to be and as relevant as you want to be. Release music as much as you want and you don’t have to call it an album, its an EP.
Crossover Music. Let’s talk about that…
With house music, be versatile enough to crossover to EDM or Deep House if you want to. It Doesn’t Matter!
What draws you to the vocalists you choose to work with?
First of all, energy is everything with me even with interviews when someone has bad energy I tell my people about that. The conversation that you have with and artist of in an interview, an employee even a family member. Energy is everything.
Then we have a conversation to gauge what they are into and what they’d like to do. Check if they fit the narrative of what I’m trying to do. Then we speak about talent. Then we record.
Was it a coincidence that female vocalists start and close off the tracklist?
I’m very hands-on in everything that I do that my team starts to ask me if I want to do it all by myself. I want precision. I want everything executed as I imagined it because an idea not executed well becomes everyone’s idea.
I planned it the way it is not to accommodate anyone, I’m trying to be myself in this EP and take it or take me, as I am.
